Failure Mode Categories are selected when an end user creates an Exception record in the system and can be used later for Analysis. When the Failure Mode (Short Description) is selected in the Exception, the Category field is auto-populated into the Exception. The end user can also select the Category first when creating and Exception which would then filter out only the Failure Modes associated with that Category.
The system allows you to create as many Categories as you wish. You may first wish to configure your Failure Modes then setup the Category which will be applied. Please see Failure Mode Setup.
Failure Mode Categories are used in the following SmartSolve© solutions:

Failures can be Categorized (grouped) for better reporting of Failure Analysis. See a few examples below showing Failures and the Categories that may be assigned to those Failures.

The system comes with the following default Failure Categories which can be renamed or Deleted from the GLOBAL Organization:
· ELECTRICAL
· FORMFIT
· MECHANICAL
· SAFETY
The following Rights must be assigned to a user to manage or view Failure Mode Categories:

· Global Failure Mode Categories will be inherited by all Local Organizations.
· Local Failure Mode Categories will only be viewed and used within that Local Organization.
1. From the Portal Page, click Smart Solutions tab > Admin and Report > Setup. Under System Wide, select Failure Mode Category.
The Failure Mode Category list displays.
2. Select Action > Add from the main menu.
3. Enter Category of a Failure Mode.
4. Click the Save button.
The new Failure Mode Category has now been added to the Failure Mode Category list.
The following options are available within the Failure Mode Category object and can be managed accordingly by an administrator: Failure Mode Categories can be Edited, Deleted, and Deactivated. These options are available in the Failure Mode Category object and can be managed by an administrator.
1. From the Portal Page, click Smart Solutions tab > Admin and Report > Setup. Under System Wide, select Failure Mode Category.
The Failure Mode Category list displays.
2. Select the icon to switch to Local view (if applicable).
3. Select the check box of the Failure Mode Category to edit, then select Action > Edit from the main menu.
4. Edit any information for your Category.
5. Click the Save button.
All changes are now reflected in the Failure Mode Category.
Failure Mode Categories can only be deleted from SmartSolve© if the Category is not currently attached to any SmartSolve© records.
1. From the Portal Page, click Smart Solutions tab > Admin and Report > Setup. Under System Wide, select Failure Mode Category.
The Failure Mode Category list displays.
2. Select the icon to switch to Local view (if applicable).
3. Select the check box of the Category to delete, then select Action > Delete from the main menu.
4. Click the Save button.
The Category has now been removed from the system.

1. From the Portal Page, click Smart Solutions tab > Admin and Report > Setup. Select Process Failure Mode from Process or Product Failure Mode from Product.
The object list displays.
2. Select the check box of the Failure Mode to edit, then select Action > Edit from the main menu.
3. Select the Category to be attached to the Failure Mode
4. Click the Save button.
The Failure Mode Category has now been attached to the Failure Mode.
